World’s seventh-ranked player and the tournament’s No. 1 seed, Venus Williams was defeated by Petra Kvitova in the opening round of the WTA’s Cellular South Cup.

“She had a good serve and she was left-handed,” Williams said. “She mixed it up really well. I’m not happy about the result of the match, but she played well.”

Anthony Mundine is still the WBA super middleweight champion. He retained his title with a unanimous decision over Australian Nader Hamdan. It was his second title defense since overcoming an eye infection that caused him to lose sight temporarily in his left eye.

“Once again the critics who said it was a mismatch, you all saw a great fight,” he said. “I thought it was going to go 12 rounds. He prepared like never before and he wasn’t coming in with the mind-set of being stopped.”
