Christian Dior drops in China

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Christian Dior, the French fashion brand, has become the latest global company to learn a hard lesson about the danger of offending Chinese sensitivities.

Dior has dropped ads featuring Sharon Stone from its advertising campaign in China.

Facing the possibility of a boycott of its products, the luxury company said Thursday that it had dropped the American actress Sharon Stone from its advertising in China after she suggested last week that the recent earthquakes in Sichuan Province were karmic retribution for Beijing’s treatment of Tibet.

“They had no choice” but to drop her from China, said Tom Bernardin, the chairman and chief executive of the advertising agency Leo Burnett Worldwide. “Obviously, she crossed the line.”

Sydney Pollack, 1934-2008

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Sydney Pollack made movies for grownups. He didn’t make movies about teenager-stalking slashers or CGI monsters or men in tights (well, except for Tootsie). The director, who died yesterday at 73, seems like the last of a breed, a filmmaker who specialized in old-fashioned, star-driven, sweeping romances and epics of the kind that used to win Oscars but that Hollywood has all but forgotten how to make. (About the only other director of recent years who still made such anachronistic spectacles was Pollack’s producing partner, Anthony Minghella, who died just two months ago.) It’s hard to imagine anyone trying nowadays to make a romance with the sprawl and scope of The Way We Were or Out of Africa, movies with artistic ambition, star-powered glamour, and faith that there are enough adult ticketbuyers to make them hits without pandering.

The Secret of The Bruja’s Tale

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

An interesting story that I like to read is “The Bruja’s Tale”, a novel written by Tim Madden. I happen to stumble on the site’s Homepage and I was moved with the plot written on it. The novel starts with a handsome bachelor whose good life is going to change on an investigation of two deaths in El Paraiso. The assignment leads to a Mayan witch, who suddenly comes out to seduce him to gain control of this soul. The story continues with some twists of spiritual magic intertwined with firm logic of the investigation. The novel promises a surprise ending: I am intent on finding that out.

I would not have to worry on getting to other book sites because the “The Bruja’s Tale” site offers a link to Buy the book directly from Mill City Press. The book is sold for only $14.95 a piece. However, the site currently offers an online special: a 25% discount when using the provided web promotional code which is listed on the page – if you happen to notice that discount at the right part of the page.

I think “The Bruja’s Tale” is a worthy book to read and get engrossed in mystery once in a while. I am very excited on how this novel will end.
